Costly Comparisons

Let us get the tsunami disaster and, indeed, all the problems afflicting the 3rd world into perspective. Here is the perspective.
Cost of one F-22 Raptor tactical fighter jet-$225 million
Cost of the US war in Iraq-$228 million a day
Amount sent by Messrs Kerry and Bush election campaigns-$400 million
Estimated cost of Mr Bush's second inauguration and ball- $1 trillion
Cost of Us war in Iraq in 2004- $147 billion
US reconstruction aid budgeted for Iraq (though never spent)-$18 billion
Amount the US initailly offered in aid to tsunami victims- $10 million
Amount US offered in tsunami aid after being chastised by the UN- $35 million

hey

hello guys, how are all of you doing? hope you are all fine and hope you enjoyed christmas.
Well the tsunami tragedy is really a sad issue for me and i believe many of us. I just found out yesterday that the tidal waves reached Kenya. Well they also reached Perth but thank God it was nothing serious. The death toll as of now is 125,000 and is still on the rise. Very sad indeed. I thought I had a terrible christmas-my housemate went home on Christmas day and was passing through Indonesia, but she was not affected by the tsunamis;I was originally going to sleep the whole day on christmas day, but a friend of mine called me for lunch, lastly i had no family to celebrate it with-pretty bad eh? not at all. I thought this was the worst chritsmas ever. But when I learnt of the tsunami tragedy-I just stopped whinging and complaining to people about how bad my christmas was. God kept me well and I had no major problems. This tragedy has really humbled me for a while, I was being selfish, wallowing in self-pity. The guys in South East Asia and parts of east Africa have had the worst christmas I can imagine, and mine was no where near bad-am alive aren't I, my whole family is well, my friends are well, what more could anyone ask for? Ieven know this Indonesian woman who lost her whole family in the tragedy, they were from the province of Aceh- the most affected province in the western part of Indonesia, pretty disheartening to even think about it. Guys you really have to count your blessings.
With all that blabbering, I just want to wish you guys A PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR and GOD bless you all.

Can Blogging do any more?

It is only in times like these where disasters of such global scale do communication tools such as phones, faxes, emails etc show their true utility and usefulness. And now with the advent of Blogging as a novel way of communicating and sharing ideas, there is already a lot of talk the role Blogs have in the greater society - social and political advocacy, global dialogue etc.

From an academic point of view, I found the approach by fellow kenyan blogger Ory,(a la Kenyan Pundit) in her participation in the the Internet and society conference at HLS. unBeknownkst to many of you, you indirectly contributed to this conference..read up on the briefing materials of the conference..(if impatient, jump to page 18 for the relevant stuff)

For a less academic illustration, the way
Web logs aid in the tsunami disaster recovery seemed very apt. It is particularly interesting to note how the blog in profle is a Team blog akin to VI, which appeared very inspiring to me.

While i VI's niche is in randomn rants and off-the-tip-of-the-tongue(finger ather) conversation, i thought i should use this thread to appeal for any of you who want to help out. I read in the newspapers yesterday of a little canadian girl who gave her entire savings of $400 to people who've lost their homes to the tsunami.
Help where u can:

Red Cross | Action Against Hunger | American Jewish World Service | American Friends Service Committee | Catholic Relief Services |
Direct Relief International
| Doctors Without Borders | International Medical Corps | American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee | Mercy Corps | Operation USA | Save the Children | Islamic Relief USA

On that note I'd like to hear from you guys if, when and what sort of a role you think virtually Insanity can play in the grand scheme of things..

as we go into the new year, new semester at school, getting closer to graduation and 'the real world' may these words convict us all on what sort of character we should have.
May you and yours have a very blessed New year!! and good luck on all the resolutions

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man(woman), my son(child)!

p2p takes another rough blow

Now this story of
Feds convicting warez pirate is not really good news for peer-to-peer file sharing ..

Truth is..many of us 'file-shares' have turned a blind eye to how these brand spacking new music albums, unreleased movies and games end up on these networks...Matter of fact I 've thought of fellows like the one convicted in the article as modern day Robin Hoods..Stealing from the FILTHY rich and giving to the needy hehe..

Music, Movies, Games are considered as peices of artwork. As unviable(such a word?) as it sounds, if these works were treated like art and not as cash cows by the industry, then money would flow directly to the artists, rather than mainly to the RIAA, MPAA, and Game publishers. Think of the open source movement ( a more interesting OS debate here) that is now stretching far beyond software and into the business enviroment. Given the very imperceptible line between software, digital music, music and games, I think that the authors of this artwork can benefit directly a great deal more from the public with the proliferation of public networks. The big fat middle man (a la RIAA, MPAA, Game publishers has become unneccesary in the way these digital artwoks are distributed.

We lose more and more rights as individual markets through Digital rights management. Essentially we are moving towards a time where we will be paying More for less value!!! I mean the best example occured going to buy a DVD player with my brother this weekend.. All the huge pricey brand name players have significant limitations to what they can play(Region coded etc) , whereas the no-frills alternative could play any format under the sun!!!! and it was like 1/5th of the price. I'm no business Guru, but the more people understand this, the less they will desire the sony's and the Bose's of ubiquitious technology. But hereing lies the problem. The big boys continue to flood the minds of the ignorant masses with marketting that will forever have them by the balls. There is now a very clear shift of this pay-more-for-less trend from hardware to digital content such asMicrosofts DRM software. Interesting to note that the companies who've endorsed the software already are mammoth monopolies.

looks like a not very user friendly future if it goes through..

End times??

Ok after the day before yesterdays Tsunami craze in Insonesia, which to me sounded more 'Day-after-tommorow' like, My growing suspicians thaat the end times are closer than we think began to be confirmed.. i mean 12300 Dead last night, and i wake up leo with 23,700 DEAD. i mean , just like that.

But it was this -
Fingerprint Reader Keyboard - thaat sealed the deal for me aki..doesnt it just scream out that Revelations chapter 13???

This tied in with the famous Bill gates is the antichrist email forward, and there u have it..a fine but bullet proof specimen of conspiracy theory lunacy? Still in the processs of decoding the word 'longhorn' , the pseudonym for the next version of microsoft windows hehe..

U betta make the most of your new year..I seriously feel like we dont have much time left..(teren teren..ten ten teeen) - ok clearly too much spiked egnog..

Christmas cheer?

Have we got it all wrong afterall?

Reading Vicky's and Denos last posts made me think is christmas really all about the mistletoe and rhye, christmas rhymes and all. I also had the chance to attend a christmas carol concert here and It all felt so meaningless. i mean I was in church but there was no church in me during before or after. For those who dn't know what i mean by this, any encounter i have with something to do with Jesus changes me or touches something inside but I found myself not even hearing the words to the songs. They are too common to have meaning and they were all done up so I couldn't here the words or follow if i tried.

So what does this have to do with the previous posts...well teh whole celebration of christamas is based on the birth of Christ and so being as he was sent as a gift and sacrifice for us should christmas reflect giving and sacrifice??? And since Jesus gave all his life to giving should we do the same at christmas????

so yeah thats my two cents

goodbye suprnova

Ok this cannot be news to anyone..it is currently making waves throughout the blogosphere..nonetheless we must hold a minute of silence for the untimely departure of the benevolent SUPRNOVA.ORG I mean this is big news to anyone who is as avid as I am when it comes to file sharing..(RIAA & MPAA BITE ME!!!!)

These guysthink ati they have won big...I think they are aggreviating the situation becuase they are pushing these guys deeper and deeper underground..

I am more stunned that the guy behind Suprnova(and many other Applications that make our lives aprreciably more worth living) is from slovenia(!), and does it in his spare time for KICKS. Props to these slovenians..they sure know how to make the rest of us software developers look bad..

Long live p2p!

Homeless.....part 2

its great to see that people are in the givin spirit this christmas.
being in stato over christmas, i have been SHOCKED by how fake people are. they go out and spend millions...ok...thousands of dollars on gifts for people/ family but then the whole time they are shopping, they complain and bitch about how 'last year...u know what the heiffer gave me!' or...'shes too fat to fit into that sweater any way.' or...'hey shes YOUR mother in law...who told you to pick such a tacky family.'....

makes me wonder...really what is the point of a gift if it isnt from the heart.? whats the point of a hug or sayin a word, or a smile, if you really dont mean it? Its all fake and void adn really has no blessing for anybody. So this season...remember its not about the gifts, or the new stuff, its about the heart and the Spirit of His Birth in us...coz thats the Greatest Gift we could ever share! Much love and blessings!!
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR (in case this is my last blog for a while)

Homeless Guy advice

Today caught up in the contagious chritsmas cheer I agreed(more like gave in to) buying a homeless guy lunch..I guess he was more srtuck by my acceptance than anything..so then began the frequently recited schpiel of homeless guy advice as the queue (self serve it was with the cashier at the end)

It is soo important TO say 'I love your' Mother..My mother Died and my sister never actually said those words to her and i know she was ..
etc etc
He goes on and on and mpaka I'm having second thoughts if buying him pizza is worth listening to all of this..
(as he's handed his slice of Pizza..)
Have u heard Jesus Came to -

He didnt finish that line - by the time i turned around Jamaa was GONE!!
didnt know whether to be pissed or relieved bana

Regardless I get a fuzzy feeling about doing something(albeit almost insignificant..the jamaa will be starving agin in NO time..). In the spirit of christmas..do something that u wouldnt ordinarily do to make someones day better. I double dare you!

Insanity...

Short Thoughts

Hi guys, hope everyone is doing fine and taking good care of themselves. I have a few short thoughts for you, found them really interesting.

Help is at hand
That helping hand you're looking for is at the end of your own arm.
Cheap and Cheerless
Never buy what you do not want because it is cheap.
Savings melt away
Money saved for a rainy day is spent in five minutes on a hot day on ice creams.
Great wealth
The greatest wealth is contentment with a little.

On the marriage fever note, my friend's wedding is just around the corner and I can't think of an affordable wedding gift for her and her to-be-hubby. Do you guys have any ideas as to what I should get?
And this question is for the ladies, where can I get a agood quality and affordable, well cheap electric hot comb?

en route

Wallapa folks...
10 minutes to my flight i thought meeen why not just give u folks a shout..Ottawa kuna maendeleo..they have blazing wifi nettworks at their airport unlike Shady Montreal.. i mean cmon..Even JKIA is wireless!!! Ok maybe its jus the jeng spirit in me trying to floss my laptop..not sure..

Anyway, as u can probly alreayd tell this is one of those rushed posts that really have no maana to them, but they usually end up being the most fun to read ama..(dont answer that)

I'm slowly going through a transformation here..U dont understand..I havent seen my Brother and Sis in law for almost 2 years now and so I'm trying to remember what I'm like around them hehe..so the rough, rugged, untidy, curse-like-a-sailor, hangover-nursing, bila-time proctrastinating Deno has GOT to go..hehe My three year old neice is bound to pick up on my bad habits. On the flip side side it is always great to get into 'family-mode' where kids are concerened..college life can fool you into thinking you are forever young and cool.

Oooh words in..Flights delayed so if you thought this was over soon..hehe pole.My flight to Ottawa was already bizarre as it was.. I sat next to this Kid, whos initial flight was cancelled but got rerouted via our flight..He's from Philly and is good friends with Kipkeino's son! Thats right..Kipchoge the kenyan legend from the mexico Olympics who was getting late for his event in 1968 due to traffic, and opted to chuck the cab and run to the stadium!!!! Anyway i thought it was randomn enough to mention..Needless to say we taalked about running, which as many of u know is not exactly my strong point..I tried to school him on those other unknown talents we Kenyans have..swimming, ball, Sooccer et al.

Wow i am one last minute guy.. I packd like 20 minutes before I jumped in a cab towards the airport. Before that i was agonizing whether the gift i got for my sis in law was over the top....THere is reason for concern when her gift box looks much larger than my Brother's hehe..Dont want to come off like i'm sending a message here!!

Jana watched Collateral - Jamie Foxx, Tom Cruise - which was the first thriller i have enjoyed in AGES. Plot was severely well executed, Tom cruise excels as a bad guy and Foxx is more an more impressive. Check it out UTAPENDA. SPeaking of Toms i heard TOm hanks was set out to be the lead in The filming of Davinci code (which i STILL havent read can u believe), but folks dont think he's 'scholarly enough. Haters...

Ok..time to randa randa and spot some pretty Somalina Chic (Ottawa is the lil Mogadishu following the mass refugee exodus) ...I'm feeling lucky.

marriage fever 3

viki! a while back u were cozing about the number of ppl who were infected by this marriage fever thing1!! well...herein comes my vent...and i guess it acts as consolation to u so that u know that its not only in australia...but in canada also!
so first during my exams...i go home to take a break and cook some dinner, my roomie comes in with the mail....in it theres a nice card...so i think 'ohh how cute...a christmas card' but then i open it...and its a wedding invitation from my EX!...ok...im over him and all...but u know how weird it is for somebody u were with to get married??? its like....wa wa wa...what if we had stayed together...would we have gotten to marriage point??
then...number 2, i go online...and my buddy says..'i have sumthing to tell u, i was gonna tell everyone at once but since your not going to be around during the dinner, i will tell you now...i got engaged on tuesday.' the details follow....
then !!!! i get an email juzi from a chile i was interning with sends us all an email with a picture of her, hands up...rocking another ROCK!!!!

so im thinking...clearly theres a bus that i missed...or maybe it was that class that i skived, where they taught u what the secret to having 'that' person in your life who you would even consider spending eternity with....or maybe...when the eligible bachelor allocation was being made...london ontario was missed...

and no im not bitter!! im just frustrated...coz the flings are much much fun...but im wondering...where are the good men...the ones who you can see a future with...the sexy men of God (refer to 'raising helen') the ones who you can be yourself with?
im jst hoping and praying that by the time i graduate and step into that real world...i will be blessed to even start moving in the direction of building a meaningful ka-sumthing with sumone.

and therein ends my daily blog...thanks for the prayers...my sis is doing much much better...n now im going to cook chapoz for dinner...n e one wanna come over

Different view

Viki, I read the article about Wangari Maathai and her comment on how we have lived with monkeys for such a long and hadn't contracted it. It's the same thing as asking why is that we live in a population where there are HIV infected people but do not contract it.
it's a blood-borne pathogen, hence no transmission unless you ingest monkey meat, get monkey blood transmission, and so on. I still believe that the origin of hiv is a jump from simian siv to humans, which later adapted itself to become hiv. Obviously it's not a concrete answer but there is much information out there to back this up. The similarity between the monkey and human viruses is uncanning, and the research done, it's hard to refute...plus i just completed a virology course and i don't think the lecturer would lie (unless he, too, was none the wiser). Well, that's just me. Sayonara...

On land and virtual land..

While we kenyans are still recooperating from the far frlom surprising but thorough lands report Others on the other side of the world have crossed the 'reality' border in their economic pursuits... Check out how a
Gamer buys $26,500 worth of virtual land.

I mean..this is just nuts..this explicitly gives graphic designers/programmers GOD status!!! They can create virtual resources! I have mixed feelings about this one.. will articulate them once they have completely sunk in..and when i'm out of the workplace not worrying about who's checking up on me..

How much of Actual prime Nairobi Land can ($26500 *80)sh2.12 mill get????? Thats like 1 or 2 acres in the CBD sio??
